PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Provides overall leadership, direction and consistency for all areas of Quality Control. Responsible for leading mill-wide quality program including direction, support and training of quality systems to managers and production teams. The Technical Manager is responsible for lab, quality assurance and on-shift quality control employees, including their results.

 

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Leads product development efforts to achieve customer and market opportunities.
  • Participates in product quality and production troubleshooting (analysis, yield improvements, defect and variation reduction, and validations)
  • Oversees quality data collection and reporting
  • Responsible for CPA Certification Program including formaldehyde emission
  • Responsible for all lab procedures and institution of new standards as required in accordance with guiding documents (i.e. ASTM, ANSI, etc)
  • Accountable for the development and maintenance of pressing recipes for all products
  • Utilize root cause analysis methods and statistical tools to resolve quality issues
  • Participate in weekend on-call coverage for the mill
  • Advocate for SPC through use of SPC tools for product and process optimization while coaching staff to do same
  • Participates in customer site visits and troubleshooting product quality issues with marketing/customers
  • Oversees QA and optimization initiatives
  • Support Production Manager, Area Coordinators, and Maintenance Leads in development, implementation, tracking, and reporting of plans for waste and grade-out improvement throughout the year
  • Share trial plans and results of trials with other mills.
  • Works with Business Technical Director to set mill published specs and maintain their accuracy.  Involve marketing for input and approval
  • Liaison with CPA and customers inquiring on emission related issues. 
  • Ensures compliance with CPA standards and works to develop ‘low or no UF’ emitting products for the market
  • Coach, support and empower employees within area ownership and hold personnel to appropriate level of accountability

KEY SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ownership of safety for quality department
  • Lead 6S projects as appropriate
  • Participates in mill safety and fire audits
  • Take reasonable measures to prevent accidents and coach staff to understand the impact they can make on a safer work environment.
  • Maintain a safe work environment
  • Ensure the completion of required safety training for all quality department staff
  • Responsible for cleanliness inside the lab and the area in front of the lab

 

BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participates in the development of annual operating budget and capital plans for facility
  • Owns additive and additive efficiency improvements

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • 4 year college degree preferred (Bachelor’s Degree in Wood Science, Chemistry, Sustainable Biomaterials, or Wood Engineering or other Engineering discipline is a plus)
  • Minimum 3+ years of related manufacturing experience required including direct leadership of people
  • Excellent problem solving skills, highly analytical and possess good math skills.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, and SPC tools.
  • Computer Skills (Word, Power Point, and advanced Excel).
  • Willingness to be on-call as necessary and work a few weekends a year

 

PLUS (NOT REQUIRED):

  • Knowledge of CARB, EPA, and DEQ requirements
