To utilize electrical, instrumentation and process control skills to support the mill operations with the goals of ensuring the manufacturing process is reliable with a high level of uptime, increasing product throughput and achieving a quality product.  Works with process control equipment (PLCs, instrumentation) throughout the mill.


Knowledgeable and proficient in solving problems related to instrumentation and process control equipment.  Complete understanding of technical and manufacturing systems and how they are interconnected. Capable of application development and ability to install, program, commission and troubleshoot technical systems. 


Provides necessary training to others in process control equipment. 


Description of Essential Duties:

  • Has complete understanding and knowledge of  the plant process control equipment  and instrumentation.
  • Installation, maintenance, preventive/predictive maintenance, setup, troubleshooting and repair of mill machinery.
  • Responsible for all instrumentation documentation including schematics, labeling, and P&IDs
  • Investigate the root cause of instrumentation failures and make recommendations for long term solution in order to achieve a high level of mill reliability.  Utilize the ARP process accordingly.
  • Key contact for both internal and external project integration. This includes project scope, planning, installation, commissioning, and follow-up documentation and training.
  • Involved in maintenance down day and extended shutdown planning.  Works with Maintenance Planners accordingly.
  • Ensure DCS, Ladder Logic, HMI programs and data bases have the most current back-ups and are fully documented
  • Is also electrically skilled.
  • Provides training to other electricians who required development in process control and instrumentation.
  • ABB DCS  and AB troubleshooting.  Able to program.
  • Undertakes Instrumentation calibrations and installations.
  • Works with VFD and DC drives programming for replacement
  • Works with other specific control equipment (i.e. GreCon, etc.)
  • Is a focal point for the creation of a process control training.
  • Obtains the required knowledge through outside resources to learn the different process equipment
  • Able to successfully complete and apply in adequate form any secondary education required (MS Project, advanced functions of Excel, ABB DCS, AB Ladder Logic, HMI servers, etc.)
  • Effectively communicates process control changes with area owners
  • Create complete and detailed job plans for work as specified in Asset Reliability Process (ARP).
  • Supports operating and maintenance staff by helping technicians resolve issues in their area
  • Enter appropriate work requests for required follow-up work.
  • Complete assigned work orders or other preventive/predictive maintenance activities based on established priorities.  
  • Participate in area project work up to and including leading a project from start to finish (consulting with manufactures/distributors, getting quotes,  making purchase requests, developing job plans/time lines, install, commission, update prints, develop PMs, training manuals, etc.)

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering  or Diploma in Electronics Technology preferred.
  • Also being a Certified Industrial Electrician is an asset
  • 3+ years relevant experience in the Electrical and Instrumentation fields with advanced process control knowledge and skill
  • Problem solving and analytical skills required
  • Demonstrated good working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, and Word, basic knowledge of Excel, Project
  • Advanced instrumentation experience including calibration, installation & troubleshooting. (using HART/Brain communication protocols)
  • Competent PLC programming and troubleshooting experience.
  • Basic Industrial Communication Skills (ControlNet, DeviceNet, EtherNet).
  • Competent industrial electricity knowledge, both power and control circuits.
  • Strong HMI knowledge
  • Seek to continually improve skill-set  (with vendor training, web based training, seminars, magazines, etc)
  • Familiarity of the basic functions of a CMMS system
  • Strong written and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to look for improvement opportunities to increase efficiencies and overall equipment uptime.
  • Provide electrical support and maintenance for hydraulics, pneumatics, hot oil systems, pumps, fans and conveyors.

  • Attend & participate in maintenance crew meetings and other group functional meetings/training.
  • Participate in daily interaction with Area Operators and Area Leads. Know their issues and follow-up.
  • Support rollout of the Asset Reliability Process (ARP).
  • Complete your assigned housekeeping tasks and initial the worksheet when completed.
  • Lead for “Job Specific Contact” for contractors (as required).
  • Continually seek to reduce costs by looking for ways to save money. (do work in-house, check for better pricing on items, etc)


Key Safety/Housekeeping Responsibilities:

  • Very safety minded given the nature of work.
  • Follows the Arauco North America Safety Philosophy and participate in the LASER process. Provide input to continually improve the safety at the Mill.
  • Participate in all mill safety programs (Laser, confined space, Hot works, etc.) identified to maintain a high level of safety awareness in the mill.
  • Maintains LOTO certification in all areas where work is required.
  • Participate in the  resolution of safety related issues
  • Participate in the development of LOTO procedures for new and existing equipment
  • Shares in the general housekeeping appearance of the mill

Budget Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that work completed is within budgetary constraints
  • Complete budgets of specialized project related to specific work
