Reliability Technician


Reliability Technician ( wood products manufacturing )--Grayling, MI

Primary Purpose:

Provides technical resource and field service related to vibration analysis, machine balancing, shaft alignment, NDT, and electric motor current assessment. Provides technical support for identification of equipment deficiencies through condition assessment and leads the process of risk assessment and control. 


Description of Essential Duties:

  • Provides procedure development, training, field support, supervision, record keeping and technical referencing for the above core technologies
  • Is directly involved in completing field work such as machine balancing, vibration rounds, vibration follow up, equipment trouble-shooting and installation, machine alignments and adjustments such as soft foot and belt tensioning
  • Monitors vibration route WO backlog and flags any discrepancies/concerns
  • Champions best practices and investigates new practices such as ultrasonics and motor current analysis
  • Supports mechanical maintenance technicians and area maintenance leads with risk management controls and reliability improvement projects
  • Maintains industry contacts and knowledge to support cost management and investment relating to purchase and upkeep of P/PM equipment and supplies
  • Interacts with the Lubrication Technician on lube issues related to equipment operation, oil sampling, lubrication optimization, and risk control measures
  • Maintains the vibration database (Machine Analyst) including set up and management of equipment hierarchy, alarm functions, fault referencing, history records, route development, program upgrades and software service contacts
  • Maintains laser alignment database (Alignment Center) including set up and programming of equipment hierarchy, history records, and program upgrades and software service contracts
  • Maintains hardware and supplies for the vibration program, including updating, repair, replacement and calibration of equipment and administering service contracts
  • Maintains hardware and supplies for laser alignment, including updating, repair replacement and calibration of equipment and administering service contracts
  • Supports and promoted the ARAUCO Asset Reliability Process (ARP)
  • Promotes P/PM practices, standards, and continuous improvement through case study documentation, monthly update reports, one-on-one coaching, status updates and seminar presentations
  • Conducts Microlog field measurements for specific equipment concerns using standard or advanced techniques
  • Analyzes vibration measurements and data trends to assess machine condition and risk urgency using FFT, phase, acceleration
  • enveloping and time waveform analysis
  • Inputs maint WR for repair or servicing issues that arise
  • Leads risk control process for items identified in order to extend equipment service life to maximum and to complete necessary repairs under controlled conditions
  • Participates in Downday/Shutdown work planning by providing priority updates, procedure details and scheduling considerations for work
  • Identified as P/PM follow up
  • Provides coaching to mechanical maintenance technicians to encourage proficiency with vibration route data collection and basic condition assessment
  • Attends and participates in Maintenance Group meetings, crew coverage duties and provides shift relief coverage on an emergency basis
  • Coordinates with maintenance planners and area maintenance leads to optimize equipment PM’s and work practices in areas of expertise
  • Participates in annual maintenance budgeting by forecasting for P/PM activities and expenses
  • Develop industry resources and contacts to maintain equipment and procedure knowledge in order to effectively diagnose machinery problems and make corrective recommendations
  • Coordinates with area maintenance leaders and area planners on job planning and scheduling for equipment reliability work
  • Supports commissioning and startup of new or rebuilt equipment through acceptance and baseline testing
  • Provides backfill for Maintenance Reliability Engineer when away from plant
  • Provides backfill for Lube Technician when away from plant
  • Provides plant wide mechanical maintenance support on an as needed basis


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Certified Industrial Millwright preferred
  • Vibration analysis knowledge and experience
  • Field balancing experience, single and dual plane balancing
  • Knowledge of nondestructive testing / inspection procedures
  • Ability to identify and correct improper machine alignment installations with laser alignment equipment
  • Computer skills using database programs, spreadsheets and word processing
  • Experience using MS Office, database programs & spreadsheets is preferred
  • Experience in the use of a CMMS preferred
  • Excellent organizational and recordkeeping skills required
  • Attention to detail required
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with people for problem solving, coaching, and work planning

Key Safety/Housekeeping Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates through use and participation the understanding of all required safety policies and procedures
  • Works actively to maintain housekeeping responsibilities
  • Maintain a clean environment around the vibration area of the maintenance shop
  • Keep tooling, supplies and manuals in usable condition and in proper storage
  • When directly overseeing contractor work, completes Contractor Work Permits and Laser Forms, lockout and permit documentation
  • Mill wide lockout certification to effectively support vibration follow up, NDT inspections and mechanical maintenance support work
