Primary Purpose:

Provides overall leadership, direction, optimization and consistency for safety, shipping procedures, ship-on-time expectations, warehousing procedures, and associated costs for the Shipping and Warehousing segments of the business. Manages the day to day activities for the Hot End. Optimization includes, but not limited to, ensuring all takeaway, Shipping and Warehousing staff have the skill sets necessary to respond to safety, throughput, quality and teamwork expectations. Works to ensure shipping and the other operational areas of the mill are working hand in hand to provide reliable equipment, and active in pursuing opportunities to improve cost, quality, safety, and monthly shipping volumes.

Description of Essential Duties:

  • Monitor, and optimize the shipping process to meet customer and ship-on-time targets Prepares and communicates shipping reports to all Technicians for education and focus
  • Goal is to continually improve all shipping metrics
  • Oversee shipping operation’s outbound movement of all board production by truck and rail
  • Provides oversight and leadership for Technicians and the equipment they operate for Takeaway, warehousing, dispatching, marshalling, shipping, related operator rounds and housekeeping of all areas
  • Oversees all Shipping and Warehousing Forklift operators
  • Ensures Trucker and staff orientations are current
  • Corresponds with trucking firms to ensure expectations are understood and met; ensures contracts and pricing is current
  • Ensures all units load are done so with optimum care to avoid damaged units being sent the customer
  • Responsible for staff development within ownerships
  • Keep all workers compliant and updated on Safety area training, JHA’s, annual orientations, lockout certification
  • Responsible for development and execution of training plans for areas of responsibility and sign off on competencies by role
  • Maximize efficiencies of workforce
  • Focus on opportunity work and balancing work schedules to match work load demands
  • Work on optimization projects to maintain the professional and clean appearance of the mill
  • Need to know industry technology and what our opportunities may be
  • Attend daily operational meetings and lead functional areas meetings as required
  • Manage area budget accounts
  • Continually work on optimizing costs for area
  • Manage shipping supplies to ensure we do not run out of needed consumables and tools
  • Participates in weekend on-call responsibilities
  • Communicates with and supports the initiatives of upstream and downstream customers in the manufacturing process with a view to continually improving their products and services
  • Arranges for the training of Technicians
  • Audit employee training plans through monthly verification of progress through hands on demonstrations
  • Be the expert and go to for questions related to shipping and warehousing processes
  • Continuously look for ways to optimize shipping performance
  • Participates in customer visits at mill and away
  • Monitors and implements detailed rounds and opportunity work
  • Delivers Technician and contractor orientations
  • Directs activities of all Shipping and Warehouse loaders
  • Works closely with Finance on monthly and year end cycle counts
  • Ensures all load diagrams are fashioned for maximum permissible loads
  • Order packing supplies shipping department such as strapping, polyethylene, air bags, timbers, and edge protectors
  • Oversee warehouse to insure cleanliness and orderliness of product adheres to warehouse layout
  • Oversight for truck drivers to insure safety compliance while loading and tarping on site
  • Manage re-strapping, inspection and visual appearance of all out-bound product
  • Works closing with Customer Service on customer order requirements
  • Ensures orders are filled completely and accurately
  • Does not ship any units that do not conform to standard packaging requirements and/or have damage
  • Maintain plant inventory levels as directed

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline
  • Minimum of 3 years’ supervisory/leadership experience
  • Minimum of five years’ of experience in shipping (logistics) and warehousing processes, preferably in engineered wood products
  • Understands the modes of transportation and routes in North America, both road and rail
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Action oriented with high energy, drive and enthusiasm

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to meet deadlines
  • A demonstrated leader of people
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Certified to operate a forklift
  • Certified to handle propane

  • Maintains LOTO certification in all areas where work is required
  • Participate in the development of warehousing and shipping safety procedures
  • Ensures areas of responsibility have exemplary housekeeping
  • Shipping bays are always kept clean and professional looking
  • Certified to handle propane
  • Certified to drive a forklift

Budget Responsibilities:

  • Hot end consumables budget
  • Ensures work completed and supplies used is within budgetary constraints
  • Complete budgets of specialized projects related to specific work
  • Participates in Annual Plan/Budget preparation
