Shift Quality Process Lead


The Shift Quality Process Lead (SQPL) works closely with machine operator’s to minimize process variation and ensure product quality meets the expected product specification while achieving costing targets with minimal waste and down-grade.  Responsible for on-shift product board property testing, ensuring inferior product (Utility, Cull) is properly isolated, owns additive management, assists/leads process trouble shooting, ensures adequate on-site resources are available and it the champion of customer satisfaction as well as shift process/product optimization.



  • Assist/lead/direct activities of team in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and maintaining key process systems throughout shift.
  • Understands and interprets hot/cold test results and work with Press and Control Room operators to take appropriate action to optimize process/product.
  • Constantly reviews the operation of the plant to monitor production and quality, anticipating and solving problems in a timely manner, and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Work closely with team on board quality issues.
  • All deficiencies are recorded in the logbook and work requests are issued.
  • Provides accurate data entry and documentation of quality issues into the QIR database (i.e. trials, downgrade, process swings, judgment calls, etc.)
  • Provide leadership and direction on optimization of products/processes with team.
  • Focuses on efficiencies to ensure we are 100% efficient or better.  Efficiencies at a 100% are a minimum expectation.
  • Responds to results in timely manner to ensure we are reducing downgrade and/or optimizing our process (i.e. resin usage, density, thickness, etc.)
  • Leverages best practices and shares within the team and across teams.
  • Conduct hot check tests in compliance with our quality procedures and frequencies and respond to results in a timely manner.
  • Communicates routinely with machine center operator’s to ensure their needs are being met.
  • Routinely walk process flow, tune your senses to how the process looks, smells, feels when things are going well.  This will help when troubleshooting.
  • Ensures the process additives area is free of environmental discharge.  In event of upset conditions, understands required steps for containment and demonstrates competency in managing area & upsets.
  • Monitors additive inventory and ensures deliveries are scheduled if needed.
  • Isolating board that is suspect, proper labeling and complete documentation for follow-up. (QIR, email)
  • Ensures that additives delivery trucks are unloaded safely, properly (proper tank, etc.) and that truck data is reviewed and maintained.
  • Defect sample collection; leave relevant data for Technical Manager for troubleshooting if resolution is not concluded on shift.
  • Ensure quality issues and updates are communicated to team on a regular basis. (i.e. email/crew meetings/daily issues/personal interaction)
  • Supports vacation, meeting and other coverage for other Shift Quality Lead personnel as needed.
  • Work with the Finishing staff to resolve down grade issues from the hot end. (i.e. water spots, resin spots, mis-cuts and blows)
  • Supports Finishing with resolution of product quality issues and assists in troubleshooting.
  • Assists in product development applied to external customers including trials, data collection, and data analysis.  Will be called to lead/support trials.
  • Understands and can perform the “operational” maintenance of process additives area.
  • Perform routine audits of team member’s performing testing and calibration of key process instrumentation. (moisture meters, flow meters, weight scales)
  • Drive consistency within the process and product by ensuring operators are adhering to product recipe and following SOP’s.
  • Demonstrate complete knowledge of HCHO program.
  • Responsible for communicating activities within shift and across shifts.  Share key learning to grow entire business, not just your team.



  • High School Diploma or GED required; additional education a plus.
  • Associate’s degree in a technical field or equivalent work experience.
  • Excellent computer and software skills such as MSWord, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge and use of SAP is preferred.
  • Lean and/or Six Sigma training preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, planning, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment / support others on the team / actively participate in team mtgs.
  • Able to complete assigned task in a timely manner, work systematically through chaotic situations.
  • Perform job functions with minimal supervision, train and coach others in process and quality systems.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in an automated manufacturing environment, preferably in continuous manufacturing of composite panels.
  • Be a role model for the organization’s design, vision and principles.
